Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) are a vital piece of life-saving equipment. When used within the first few minutes of Sudden Cardiac Arrest, an AED can save lives. However, an AED is only useful if it is adequately maintained in good working order.
AEDs perform regular self-test, checking the battery, components and circuitry of the device for any potential problems. If the device fails a self-test, there will be an audible or visual (or both) warning given so that corrective action can take place. Therefore it is vital that you check your AED regularly to ensure is passed its self-tests. You should also check the electrode pads and battery to ensure they haven’t expired, along with the ancillary equipment required.
