STEPS:

Exact process details may vary depending upon department.

1. Obtain the Variable Unit Form also known as a 199 form, or Research Contract, or research units form. You'll find these in your lab, on your department's website, or from your major's undergraduate academic advisor. (Each form can differ a bit in different major departments.)

2. Fill out the Form with information from your PI (faculty mentor or lab manager) such as the research plan, weekly hours expected and criteria for passing.

3. Turn in the signed Form. Your PI (faculty mentor) will need to sign to approve the units requested. The form should be submitted to your major department's advising office. (Exact details may differ between department's so follow your advisor's instructions or the instructions on the form!)

4. Get a CRN. The advising office will provide a CRN (Course Registration Number) for you to use to sign up for the class.

5. Register for the class in Schedule Builder. Make sure to adjust the units to reflect the time you'll spend on research. 3 hours equals one unit.

6. Submit a Final Report. At the end of the quarter you will generally need to submit a report of what you've accomplished for approval

Student Transcript Notation for Research

If you’re in an approved and supervised research position working 40 hours or more per quarter, you can have your research efforts recorded on your official academic transcript through the “transcript notation” process in Handshake. Transcript notation will show “research internship”, the research professor you worked for and the quarter(s) that you participated.
